by DayakDaily Team KUCHING, Nov 10: Dudong assemblyman has cautioned against the rise of “taiko-like” behaviour among students, warning that such conduct could erode discipline and foster a culture of violence in schools. Speaking at the Children’s Day Celebration 2025 held in Sibu on Sunday, Tiong, who is also Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, stressed the need for both parents and hostel wardens to play active roles in shaping students’ moral character and maintaining discipline. “We cannot tolerate this. As adults, especially in schools, we must educate them properly. If left unchecked, violent culture will continue,” he said, according to a report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS). He also reminded parents not to neglect their responsibilities once their children are placed in boarding schools. “Sometimes parents send their children to hostels but never visit them for a month. When problems occur, they blame the school. Of course, money is important, but children are far more important,” he pointed out. At the same time, he emphasised that hostel wardens must carry out their duties diligently to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students. “Wardens must take full responsibility. The safety and management of every block or floor must be well-organised. They must perform their duties properly,” he stressed, reprimanding those who shirk their responsibilities or point fingers when incidents happen. The Children’s Day Celebration 2025 event was organised by Parti Demokratik Progresif (PDP) Bukit Assek Division in collaboration with PDP Nanga Salim Branch, Kelab Sosial Penduduk Pedada Sibu, and Persatuan Kebajikan Heng Shan Sibu, with Farley Supermarket as the venue sponsor. The programme was attended by about 300 participants, including Farley Café manager Wong Siong Ming and PDP Bukit Assek Women’s chief Evonne Yong. – DayakDaily
