Superintendent of Police Gunjan Arya has said that vigilance is crucial to ensuring equitable distribution of limited resources by taking systematic measures to curb corruption and malpractices. He was delivering a talk at the Vigilance Awareness Week programme organised by The Hindu in association with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) on the theme, “Vigilance - Our shared Responsibility”, at JSS SDM Institute of Management Studies and Research in Dharwad on Friday. Mr. Arya said that the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has adopted a two-pronged approach in fighting corruption. It not only focuses on preventive measures but also on punitive measures so as to ensure that malpractices and corruption are curbed in a systematic manner. He said that vigilance is all about the five Ws (Who, What, Where, When, Why) and one H (how). He told students that to be vigilant one did not require in-depth knowledge of the law or rules and regulations, but simple common sense will help them in deciding what is right or wrong. Elaborating on the significance of the CVC, he said that the CVC’s logo has an “open eye” which means that it will always keep its eyes open and watch over each and everyone. The Superintendent of Police called upon the youth to be vigilant and report unfair and corrupt practices and thereby, participate in the fight against corruption. Giving his own example, Mr. Arya explained how education is important and how it transforms one’s life. Emphasising the need for hard work for achieving success in personal and professional life, he called upon students to study well with a focused approach. In a competitive era, it is important to be self-motivated and try to rise above the line in order to achieve success, he said. He said that it is important for students to know about their rights and also duties and have a fair understanding of the law of the land so as to participate in direct or indirect nation building activities. Director of Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade Institute of Management Studies and Research Sunilkumar R. Hiremath highlighted the importance of Vigilance Awareness Week and the need for sensitising students against corruption and to the need for curbing it. Plant in-charge BPCL LGP Senthil Dayal elaborated on how students can contribute in the fight against corruption. He said that upon coming across malpractices and cases of corruption around them, students should immediately report to the competent authorities. He said that while various efforts have resulted in curbing corruption, it is only through coordinated efforts by all that corruption can be eradicated.
