‘Unacceptable choice’: Student disciplined for dressing as KKK member for Halloween

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV/Gray News) - A student in Tennessee was sent home from school after allegedly dressing up as a Ku Klux Klan member for Halloween. Bedford County Schools said that the student was partially dressed as a member of the KKK while telling their teacher they were dressed as a priest. However, school officials said the student later told classmates that they were indeed a Klan member and revealed their full costume. “The student was sent home after the parent was contacted and was gone from the school by about 10:30 a.m., and severe disciplinary measures were imposed in response to this unacceptable choice,” school leaders said. “Our administration handled this matter swiftly and with full seriousness.” Bedford County Schools said it rejects racism and hate. “Our commitment is to foster an inclusive and respectful environment, and this is the standard we expect from both our students and staff,” the district shared. School leaders stated that the team will provide ongoing character development for the school community to foster understanding and prevent future incidents. “Support services, including counseling, are also readily available for any student impacted by these matters. Our district maintains clear policies against discrimination and harassment,” the school district said. The student in question was not immediately identified by the school.
