COLLEGES Old Dominion will host ESPN’s “SportsCenter” live from Kaufman Mall on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 2-3 p.m. The live broadcast will precede the Monarchs’ football game set for 7:30 that night on ESPN against Troy. The show will be hosted by ESPN’s Matt Barrie. ODU students, alumni and fans are encouraged to attend and will have the chance to appear live on camera. Those in attendance will have a chance to receive prizes and giveaways and could be chosen to participate in live on-air segments. COLLEGE FOOTBALL ODU, UVA QBs make O’Brien class Old Dominion’s Colton Joseph and Virginia’s Chandler Morris were named as one of three dozen FBS quarterbacks to the Davey O’Brien QB Class of 2025. Among the others: Navy’s Blake Horvath, Miami’s Carson Beck, Virginia transfer Anthony Colandrea of UNLV, Georgia Tech’s Haynes King and Duke’s Darian Mensah. COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL UVA, Richmond stars on national watch lists Virginia point guard Kymora Johnson and Richmond’s Maggie Doogan were among 50 players named to the Naismith Trophy College Player of the Year Watch List. Virginia’s Sa’Myah Smith and Doogan were named among 20 watch-list candidates for the Katrina McClain Award, which recognizes top power forwards. Smith played three seasons for LSU, averaging 6.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game last season. COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOCCER Elon ousts W&M in CAA quarterfinal Elon ended William & Mary’s season with a 1-0 victory over the Tribe in a Coastal Athletic Association quarterfinal at Albert-Daly Field. Ashlee Brehio scored about five minutes into the match off a deep free kick. She knocked the ball through goalkeeper Gwen Doughty’s legs for her fourth goal of the season. The Tribe (7-7-4) outshot the Phoenix 18-11 and put six shots on goal, but Elon keeper Katie Bisgrove made a key late save on Ivey Crain to preserve the victory. Elon (11-2-5) will travel to take on South Division top seed UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m. Sunday. UVA coach Swanson gains 500th career victory Coach Steve Swanson gained his 500th career victory as No. 7 Virginia defeated Boston College 2-0 in Charlottesville. He became the seventh women’s soccer coach to reach that mark; four of them are active. Maggie Cagle and Allie Ross converted penalty kicks in the 53rd and 59th minutes, respectively. Tatum Galvin was taken down in the box to set up the first goal, and a hand-ball in the box off a crossing pass led to the second goal. Swanson has compiled his victories in stints with Dartmouth, Stanford and UVA (12-2-3, 6-2-2 ACC), which got the fifth seed for the ACC Tournament and will play at fourth-seeded Florida State in a quarterfinal at 8 p.m. Sunday in Tallahassee. The victor will face top-seeded Stanford on Nov. 6 in the semifinals in Cary, North Carolina. BC, which did not qualify for the six-team tournament, fell to 5-8-5, 1-7-2. ODU wins division title, clinches No. 2 Sun Belt seed Old Dominion (10-2-4, 6-1-3) won the Sun Belt East Division championship and secured the conference tournament’s No. 2 seed by defeating Georgia State 2-1 in Norfolk. The tournament will start Monday in Foley, Alabama. ODU again will face Georgia State, which got the seventh seed, at 2:30 p.m. Eastern. The other matches will pit No. 3 Louisiana Monroe against No. 6 Marshall at noon, No. 1 South Alabama versus No. 8 Louisiana at 5:30 p.m. and No. 4 Texas State vs. No. 5 James Madison at 8. The semifinals are set for Wednesday and the final for Saturday, Nov. 8. Riley Mullen scored on a rebound of a saved Yuliia Khrystiuk shot in the 20th minute. Andrea Balcazar Algarin then headed in a right-corner pass from Khrystiuk to make it 2-0. The Panthers halved the deficit when Aaliyah Faddoul scored in the rain in the 72nd minute, but ODU outshot GSU 13-6 and held the visitors without a shot in the last 12 minutes. VWU finishes ODAC 8-1-1 Virginia Wesleyan (13-2-2, 8-1-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) closed its regular season by shutting out Randolph 2-0 in Lynchburg. Paige Bissell scored her second goal of the year in the 14th minute, then assisted Alaina Alston on her sixth in the 71st. Riley Keefe made four saves for her eighth shutout of the year. COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER Va. Wesleyan wins fifth match in row Zach Bittler scored in the 10th and 35th minutes as Virginia Wesleyan (12-4-1, 6-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) posted a 4-0 shutout of Randolph (5-8-3, 3-5-1) in Virginia Beach. The Marlins will enter the conference tournament on a five-match winning streak. Nolan Schulte scored in the 48th minute and Kaden Onolaja added the final goal in the 73rd. Grady Lawrence had two assists and JaMarhe Wills added one. VWU gained the No. 5 seed and will play a quarterfinal Saturday at No. 4 Bridgewater. Mary Washington blanks No. 22 CNU Mary Washington (9-6-3) upended Christopher Newport 1-0 in the rain on Jennings Family Stadium’s artificial turf, beating the 22nd-ranked Captains on a header by Gerrard Valoyi off a corner kick with 9:35 to go in regulation. CNU (10-2-4) saw its five-match winning streak end despite outshooting the Eagles 16-7. COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY No. 1 CNU completes unbeaten regular season Top-ranked Christopher Newport (17-0) completed its third unbeaten regular season — and its second in two years — with a 3-0 triumph at Mary Washington (11-6). The NCAA Division III Tournament will be next for the Captains. Caroline Hughlett scored 47 seconds into the game, and Emily Evans added two fourth-quarter goals. Lily Kerr made four saves for her school-record eighth 60-minute shutout of the season. It was Kerr’s school-record 70th start. Randolph-Macon shuts out VWU Breea Dressler’s goal in the 14th minute stood up to give Randolph-Macon (10-6, 4-3 ODAC) a 1-0 triumph at Virginia Wesleyan (5-10, 2-5). COLLEGE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL No. 18 Va. Wesleyan improves to 27-1 Virginia Wesleyan (27-1, 10-0), ranked 18th in Division III, continued its ODAC perfection by rolling past Randolph-Macon 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-15). Niya Nash recorded 32 assists to reach 1,000 for the season, and Madi Schmidt had 15 kills and five digs. CNU pays back Bridgewater Christopher Newport (18-7) avenged a home loss, defeating Bridgewater 3-1 (25-7, 31-29, 22-25, 25-23) in the Eagles’ arena. BC fell to 16-7. Alyssa Dozier had 19 kills for CNU, Fielding Croft had 49 assists and Emmy Carpenedo had 14 kills and 13 digs. Grassfield High graduate Maddie Hanes had 20 digs and three aces.
