NEW YORK, N.Y. — The New Victory Theater has opened its 2025–26 season Nov. 1 with a rustic, musical retelling of the classic fairytale Snow White, marking the start of the theater’s 30th anniversary year. My family and I attended and enjoyed ourselves immensely. The production was a witty and warm rendition of the Brothers Grimm tale — and definitely worth a day trip to Manhattan — with the twist was that even villains deserve chances at redemption. The production, co-produced by New International Encounter (NIE), Cambridge Junction and Tobacco Factory Theatres, runs through Nov. 9. Tickets start at $25. Fun for the whole family, the show is recommended for ages 6 and older. It’s 75-minute long with no intermission. The colorful production features original songs performed by a delightful combination of live storytellers, forest-dwelling characters (in lieu of dwarfs in the more familiar edition) and a jazz-loving magic mirror with a wicked sense of humor. “We are delighted to welcome our friends New International Encounter back to the New Victory to open our 30th birthday season,” said Mary Rose Lloyd, artistic director of New 42. “Audiences will love the comedic and folksy elements of their wonderful take on Snow White.” Originally slated for the 2019–20 season, Snow White was postponed due to the pandemic shutdown. The production has now been refreshed after a five-year hiatus. “We are really excited to be back at New Victory — we have had so many great experiences here,” said Alex Byrne, co-artistic director of NIE. “Snow White will be full of live folksy music and fun, some lovely songs and a comic collection of forest-dwelling misfits. “It’s a classic story about growing up, growing old, growing your own food and why you might not want to trust a very shiny apple. We can’t wait to bring this famous story to life in joyfully quirky fashion.” Before and after every performance, families and kiddos can take part in free “do-together” activities in the New Victory lobby — 45 minutes before and 20 minutes after each show — where children can explore themes and performance skills inspired by the production. The theater, operated by New 42, received a 2025 Tony Honor for Excellence in the theater and continues to be a leader in family-friendly and youth-focused arts programming. Tickets are available at the New Victory box office at 209 W. 42nd St., by phone at 646-223-3010, or online at NewVictory.org.
