‘Paris of the East’ reborn: IDSC highlights Cairo’s revival

By Dina Yehia In a major push to revitalize the nation’s cultural capital, the Egyptian government has poured significant resources into breathing new life into Khedivial Cairo, one of the city’s most elegant districts. To document and promote this ambitious urban and cultural transformation, the Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC), affiliated with the Egyptian Cabinet, has launched a compelling series of short documentary videos. These restoration and redevelopment efforts aim not only to preserve Egypt’s architectural heritage but also to position Cairo as a leading global tourist destination. This vision marks a strategic move toward promoting sustainability in tourism and cultural heritage, directly aligning with the goals of Egypt’s Vision 2030 for sustainable development. In the heart of Egypt’s capital, Khedivial Cairo is witnessing a dramatic comeback, fully reclaiming its historic and architectural elegance. The government’s intensive efforts in revitalizing heritage architecture projects are designed to enhance Cairo’s strategic role in commerce, culture, tourism, and services, attracting more visitors to its historic landmarks and reviving its unique heritage identity. The IDSC’s documentary series serves as a powerful showcase for this national endeavor. The videos vividly capture the urban and cultural metamorphosis of the area, emphasizing the crucial cooperation between state institutions and the local community. This collaborative approach is vital to successfully bringing back the spirit of the “Paris of the East,” as originally envisioned by Khedive Ismail over a century ago. The documentaries shed light on the government’s expanded efforts and the active participation of residents, illustrating how community engagement is central to the project’s success. The IDSC’s coverage has garnered significant official praise, notably from Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo. In an interview featured in the series, the Governor lauded the project, praising the “great attention and support from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouli, and all state institutions.” Governor Saber emphasized the historical significance of the district during his inspection remarks, noting that Khedivial Cairo was originally constructed in the distinctive European style between 1890 and 1920 during the reign of Khedive Ismail, earning it the famous moniker of “Paris of the East.” By launching this documentary series, the IDSC is effectively communicating the scope and impact of these projects to both a domestic and international audience, reinforcing the narrative of a revitalized Cairo that honors its past while building a sustainable future.
