Formula 1 icon Martin Brundle has pinpointed the moment that scattered Oscar Piastri’s brain in the championship battle. Piastri took the lead in the drivers’ standings after winning the fifth race of the season in Saudi Arabia, but the Aussie has endured a horror past month with teammate Lando Norris surpassing him on the leaderboard. Brundle says the wheels began to fall off for the Australian during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix when he crashed out of the race only five corners into the race. “Obviously Baku would have scattered his brain,” Brundle said on the The F1 Show podcast. “That was a very difficult weekend for him with twice in the barriers and the jump start and it seems to have gone off the rails. “Something has happened in Oscar’s head. Have we seen any signs of this before in his previous junior racing or Formula 1 seasons that’s worth looking into? “But something has just gone wrong and he has lost a bit of confidence. The way that these cars go into corners, and how close the competition is at the moment, you only need to be a touch off and he needs a very solid weekend (in Brazil). (Photo by Alfredo ESTRELLA / POOL / AFP) “We described him as horizontal for pretty much all the whole season because that’s how he looked … and he always has been so calm on the radio and not letting things get to him and suddenly that glass ceiling and that facade, or whatever it is, seems to have gone from him and he is struggling.” Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Piastri had a 31-point advantage over Norris in the drivers’ standings. In the opening 16 races of the season, the 24-year-old had finished in the top three in 14 races. He finished fourth in Canada with his worst result of the season coming during the Australian Grand Prix when he finished ninth after spinning out in the wet. Over the past four races however he has recorded a DNF, fourth, fifth and fifth. Norris on the other hand has finished seventh, third, second and first in the same span. Norris has scored 64 points over the last month, doubling the points of Piastri as he takes the momentum with both hands and now appears on track to claim his first F1 crown. As Piastri’s struggles began to mount, conspiracy theories sprouted up online that McLaren was giving preferential treatment to Norris. Brundle however rubbished those claims and said the Woking-based outfit would not care which driver in the garage won the world drivers’ crown. “Rest assured, a team does not spend $400 million a year and have one and a half thousand employees and try to make one of their cars go a little bit more slowly,” Brundle said. “So everybody associated with Oscar’s car will want him to turn that around soon, as in Brazil. “I’m sure McLaren are checking that chassis, the aerodynamics, the fit, the set-up of that car ad infinitum to make sure …. because I really honestly believe McLaren don’t mind which driver wins the world championship as long as it’s one of them and it’s not Max Verstappen, it’s super important to them.” Max Verstappen is on the doorstep of Norris and Piastri. (Photo by MOHD RASFAN / AFP) Verstappen is lurking dangerously behind the McLaren duo having won three of the past five races and finishing second and third in the other two. The four-time champion sits only 36-points adrift of Norris and with four races remaining is a major threat to spoil the party for McLaren. “Having Max in the mix puts pressure on both McLaren drivers, they had it easy until now,” Jacques Villeneuve said.
