The Himachal Pickleball Association is building momentum for one of India’s fastest-growing sports in the country’s hill state. For Sameerr Vinod Kapur, Secretary of the association, the journey is about harnessing local enthusiasm, geography, and tourism potential to make Himachal a pickleball hub. “Pickleball has been growing rapidly in India. I have been associated with many sports and travelling all over the country, as I saw pickleball as the correct sport for Himachal,” Kapoor said. “We’ve been working on the ground for many years, installing infrastructure and spreading awareness across the state.” The association was formed after the group connected with the Indian Pickleball Association (IPA). “We were looking for the right partner who shared our vision. When we met the IPA management, it inspired us to do what we are doing today,” Kapoor added. Before the association’s formation, pickleball in Himachal existed only through private initiatives. “There was no official structure in the state. Enthusiasts started most ventures from nearby states like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttarakhand,” he said. “Since the sport naturally attracted young people, we knew the youth of Himachal would adapt quickly.” Despite being in its early stages, pickleball has begun to gain traction across several districts. “We are very confident that this game will soon become a favourite among the local youth and all genders. We’ve already seen participation grow in cities like Shimla, Solan, Mandi, Dharmshala, and Hamirpur,” Kapoor said. “Many projects are in the planning stage for indoor arenas across the state.” Infrastructure, however, remains a challenge. “Finding large flat land in hilly terrain is always difficult, and construction costs are higher,” Kapoor admitted. “But because pickleball requires less space, it’s easier to build than other sports facilities. Tourism is huge in Himachal, and visitors already love the sport. With its popularity rising, many entrepreneurs are now exploring infrastructure investments.” Schools have also begun to take notice. “It’s a natural progression. Awareness has spread effectively, and many institutes are exploring pickleball courts within school premises,” he said. The association views pickleball as an ideal sport for the state’s youth. “With its easy-to-adapt nature, pickleball has tremendous potential to engage young people. We are confident that the youth will excel in this sport in the coming years,” Kapoor said. The long-term vision is clear. “A dedicated all-season pickleball centre is our goal for Himachal, a venue capable of hosting major tournaments,” he said confidently. “Next year will be our year.” About Indian Pickleball Association: The Indian Pickleball Association is the official governing body for pickleball in India and is dedicated to promoting, developing, and organising the sport across the country.
