Ryan Papenhuyzen has broken his silence on his shock decision to walk from the Melbourne Storm, posting an emotional message on Instagram. The 27-year-old star sensationally walked away from the final year of his $1 million per season Storm contract to explore his options elsewhere. It is understood the fullback met with Storm part-owner and chair Matt Tripp on Wednesday night, where he asked for an immediate exit, which was reluctantly granted. Papenhuyzen, who has been heavily linked with the new rebel rugby union competition R360, has been a regular in the Storm side for years and a huge loss for the NRL heavyweights. Source: News.com.au With Papenhuyzen’s lucrative contract off the books, Melbourne may choose to spend the freed-up funds to try to lure superstar North Queensland youngster Jaxon Purdue to the club. Purdue, as well as Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, have been heavily linked to the Storm, with both free to negotiate with Melbourne come November 1. Papenhuyzen played 113 games for the Storm over nine years, winning the Clive Churchill medal in the club’s 2020 grand final victory over the Panthers. While he has been heavily linked to a number of new homes, including R360 and the expansion Perth Bears, Papenhuyzen indicated he’s keen on a break from footy.
