MAGA architect Steve Bannon has issued a stark warning to conservatives after democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election. “Tonight should be a wake up call to the populist nationalist movement under President Trump,” he told Politico Magazine in an interview conducted just after midnight on Wednesday. “These are very serious people, and they need to be addressed seriously.” Bannon, a top supporter of President Donald Trump, said that while many Republicans see Mamdani as a political gift, he doesn’t view things that way. He said that Mamdani’s victory is proof of the staying power of populist politics, and is a harbinger of growing anti-establishment forces on the left that the GOP ignores at its own peril. Bannon appeared to be impressed by Mamdani’s ability to draw low-propensity voters to the polls, saying, “this is kind of the Trump model.” He branded Mamdani a “neo-Marxist” rather than a populist, and Bannon said he was eager to see Trump take on Mamdani in the coming days. Giving his take on Mamdani’s victory speech, during which the mayor-elect directly called out Trump, Bannon said, “Tonight, what you saw out of Mamdani is something you’ve never seen this entire race. I mean, that’s an angry guy. That was in your face, and particularly the president’s face, up in his grill, and the president responded: ‘And so it begins.’” Said Bannon, “People better understand they have a fight on their hands. This guy is a serious guy. I’ve said this from the beginning — I said early in the primary.” As for alarm bells for Republicans, Bannon said: “There should be even more than alarm bells. There should be flashing red lights all over.”
