Even the most devoted royal history savant would be forgiven for not knowing much about Henry Stuart, The Duke of Gloucester, but he could be about to get his time to shine. He was the last member of the royal family to find himself behind bars, idly stirring his gruel and waiting to have his slop bucket emptied. And then along came Prince Andrew, no longer allowed to market himself to his fat-pocketed friends in the Middle East and the brutal hard men of Central Asia as the ‘Duke of York’. Now a leading authority on Andrew has said he thinks the royal could end up being “put on trial” or even “behind bars” if found guilty as the red-hot heat under the toxic prince has gone from scorching to surface-temperature-of-the-sun. It couldn’t happen to a nicer non-duke. Copied URL to clipboard Trump said he was invited to Epstein island but "never went" Donald Trump claimed he was invited... In just the last 24 hours since I had to find synonyms for ‘disgraced’ to describe Andrew, it has been revealed that: He has lived rent-free at his palatial home Royal Lodge for 23 years (Prince William and Kate, The Prince and Princess of Wales, by contrast, pay commercial rent on their Windsor home); government ministers are queuing up to call for an inquiry into Andrew and for his eviction; and there is growing noise about him leaving the UK. One handy dandy option for - it turns out that he has access to his own fully-staffed palace in Abu Dhabi, courtesy of the UAE’s royal family. You read that right - Fully. Staffed. Palace. Prince Andrew seems to be attracting one scandal after another. Picture: AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth This has all emerged since Virginia’s Giuffre’s posthumous memoir Nobody’s Girl has hit number one on the bestseller lists in the UK, US and Australia, a book darker than it is possible to adequately describe, detailing the three occasions on which she alleged Andrew sexually assaulted her, and her years of the most acute suffering at the hands of, among others, Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. The book spoke of one especially shocking incident involving an orgy with at least eight young women, likely teenagers, in a story that shook the world. Andrew has always denied these claims. Nobody’s Girl brings her allegations against the prince to horrific light – she writes about the “entitled” royal who felt it was “his birthright” to allegedly have sex with her as teenager and also alleges that he took part in an orgy with Ms Giuffre and “eight other young girls” on Epstein’s private island. Picture: Supplied Ms Giuffre’s account is only the first of the fires engulfing the radioactive prince as the swell of anger towards him grows. Public and political sentiment is such that I reckon pitch fork sales are about to go through the roof. On Tuesday the Telegraph revealed that Andrew has not paid rent on his palatial home, Royal Lodge, in 23 years - which equates to a saving of more than $12 million. Loud questions are now being asked over the prince’s finances, which are murkier than a Scottish bog at midnight. How has an unemployed and unemployable man who has only ever worked for his Mumsy (in the navy, royalling) been paying the estimated $1.2 million in annual running costs on the Lodge? Virginia Giuffre’s book, released just this week, has shocked readers. Picture: Getty Images Both government and opposition politicians and ministers are gunning for him, including calling for a parliamentary inquiry. One minister told the Times, “We should be throwing him under the bus. … He should stop spongeing off the state, given he’s not a working royal.” Another minister described the prince being allowed to live in such a grand home as “pretty detestable”. A third minister has said: “It’s outrageous he’s continuing to live there. It makes me really angry thinking about him sitting there, totally idle.” Adding to the mystery about how Andrew is paying for his plummy life is the fact the Daily Mail has revealed he did not receive any significant sort of inheritance from the late Queen or the Queen Mother. There are a lot of unanswered questions surrounding the duke. Picture: David Parker / POOL / AFP Nor does any money come from the King. Late last year, Charles officially cut him off, including stopping paying for his private round-the-clock security team, a cost Andrew must now meet privately. (Andrew has not received Sovereign Grant cash since 2019 when he quit official duties.) Rober Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, put it simply telling BBC radio, “The public are sick of him. It’s about time Prince Andrew took himself off to live in private and make his own way in life”. There is also the question of whether Private Citizen Andrew could be about to be rudely introduced to Lady Justice. The single person who knows the most about the reviled prince than anyone who hasn’t had their Ambre Solaired toes licked on a Provence sun lounger is historian Andrew Lownie, author of the bombshell Entitled. Andrew Lownie is the author of Entitled. Picture: HENRY NICHOLLS / AFP “I wouldn’t be surprised if Andrew is actually put on trial,” Lownie told the Telegraph’s podcast. “There are going to be more damaging revelations.” Appearing on Good Morning Britain, and asked if Andrew could end up “behind bars” he said, “Yes, I think that is eventually what is going to happen, I mean if the due process of law takes place. I just hope our legal system is prepared to bite the bullet.” Speaking to news.com.au, Lownie said on Wednesday, “I do think there are grounds for Andrew to be investigated by the Metropolitan Police…after he asked his taxpayer-funded Police Protection Officer to investigate and potentially smear Virginia Giuffre and also for them to reopen investigations into his involvement with the sex trafficking of Giuffre which they three times have considered and done nothing.” A lot of has come about Andrew. Picture: Dave Benett/Getty Images While researching Entitled, Lownie fought to have government documents relating to the ten years Andrew bobbed around the world supposedly representing British trade interests released; however his Freedom of Information requests were repeatedly blocked. The details of who Andrew met with, who travelled with him and what he did during that decade will not be released by the Foreign Office until 2065, even though under normal rules, records transferred to The National Archives are only kept secret for 20 years. “Twenty years ago MPs called for him to be looked into by the National Crime Agency for his activities whilst Special Representative for Trade and Investment and I believe the case to do so is even stronger now,” Lownie told news.com.au. On Wednesday came a fresh blow for the prince after a business deal that would have provided a “financial lifeline” fell apart. (That anyone would want to still have anything to do with astounds me. He’s the spent uranium rod of wheelers and wannabe dealers.) Lownie has suggested that Andrew could be jailed over all of this. Picture: Daniel LEAL / AFP According to the Telegraph, “there are fears in Andrew’s circles that the wider Royal family is trying to force him into exile by leaving him with nowhere to live in the UK.” Gosh, I wonder why Crown Inc might feel that way. I hope Andrew likes heat then, the searing desert kind; I bet that palace in the UAE is looking better and better every day now.
