‘I Have Not Been…’: The Family Man’s ex-director Suparn S Verma breaks silence on his absence from season 3 | Exclusive

After the roaring success of Haq director Suparn S. Varma seems to be in a reflective mood. The film starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi has been lauded for its sensitivity emotional depth and hard-hitting commentary. But beyond the big-screen brilliance Suparn is no stranger to shaping the world of Indian web entertainment. He’s the man who co-wrote and directed The Family Man Season 2 one of India’s most celebrated streaming series alongside creators Raj and DK. And while he’s not directing the upcoming Season 3 his connection with the show and its team remains deeply emotional. Why is Suparn S. Varma not directing The Family Man Season 3? In an exclusive interview when asked why he isn’t part of the third season Suparn smiled with the ease of someone who has made peace with the flow of creativity. He said “Well honestly I was called for season two to write and direct it and you know I happily did that. But the nature of our profession is such that we are gypsies we are vagabonds” he said. He further added “We go from setting up one tent mixing with people creating that energy dismantling the tent setting up another tent another tent another tent. Sometimes new people join sometimes old people come back. It’s a universe we build and rebuild.” He added that there’s always a sense of nostalgia when moving on from such a beloved project but the door isn’t closed forever. “You never know with Season 4 or 5 that journey could again bring us together” Suparn hinted. On handling sensitive themes in The Family Man Having worked closely on the show’s earlier seasons Suparn recalled the care and detail that went into portraying socially and politically layered subjects. “There were a lot of sensitivities involved in season two because it kind of touched upon the character of Raji who was part of the Tamil Tigers. We were respectful of a lot of sentiments and did a lot of research before putting pen to paper” he shared. “When you write from a space of no agenda things are honest. And I think that honesty is what connects with audiences.” His thoughts on The Family Man Season 3 With the trailer of The Family Man 3 already out anticipation is at its peak. The new season reportedly dives into India’s Northeast and global espionage politics a territory Suparn believes is both risky and rewarding. “I’ve not been part of season three; I was shooting Rana Naidu and Haq at that point. But I’ve seen the trailer I think it’s going to be an absolute blast” he said. “Srikant and his family are in a shit ton of trouble” he laughed “but I’m sure Srikant and JK will get themselves out like always — saving the world in their own way.” Suparn S. Varma on Manoj Bajpayee Talking about working with Manoj Bajpayee Suparn’s admiration was unmistakable. “Manoj Bajpayee is one of the greatest actors in the world. There is nothing he can’t do” he said. “What surprises me is his childlike curiosity. He comes to set with wonder with fear with hunger; that energy makes everyone around him better.” From Aatma and Acid Factory to Haq and The Family Man Suparn S. Varma has always walked the line between intensity and truth. And while he may not be at the helm of Family Man 3 his imprint on its soul remains undeniable. As Haq continues to win hearts on the big screen Suparn S. Varma stands tall as a storyteller who doesn’t shy away from emotional depth or socio-political complexity. Whether it was the layered world of The Family Man or the haunting realism of Haq his storytelling always carries a pulse a blend of heart humour and hard truth. And even though he’s not steering Family Man 3 his creative imprint on the franchise remains undeniable. From espionage to emotion Suparn’s journey reminds us that great stories may end but great storytellers always find a new beginning.
