‘I am not done’, Kamala Harris says she may run for US president again

Former US Vice President Kamala Harris has hinted she may run for president again, telling the BBC she would “possibly” return to the White House race in the future. In her first UK interview since losing to Donald Trump in the 2024 election, Harris expressed confidence that America would one day elect a female president. She made her strongest indication yet that she could mount another presidential campaign in 2028, brushing off polls that rank her as an outsider for the Democratic nomination. Speaking to Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Harris criticised Trump, calling him a “tyrant”, and said her earlier warnings about his leadership had been proven right. As Democrats continue to analyse their loss to Trump, many within the party have blamed former President Joe Biden for not stepping aside early enough, while others have questioned whether Harris could have run a stronger campaign focused on the economy. During the interview, Harris said her grandnieces would, “in their lifetime, for sure”, see a female president. Asked if that person could be her, she replied, “possibly”, signalling she is considering another run. Although she has not made a final decision, Harris made clear that she still sees a future for herself in politics. “I am not done,” she said. “I have lived my entire career as a life of service and it’s in my bones.” Harris dismissed polls that place her behind figures such as Hollywood actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the Democratic field, insisting she never bases decisions on public opinion. “If I listened to polls I would have not run for my first office, or my second office – and I certainly wouldn’t be sitting here,” she said. She also accused Trump of fulfilling her earlier predictions that he would behave like a fascist and weaponise government institutions. “He said he would weaponise the Department of Justice – and he has done exactly that,” she said, citing the suspension of comedian Jimmy Kimmel by ABC after a joke about the right-wing reaction to influencer Charlie Kirk’s death. Harris claimed the suspension, celebrated by Trump, came after pressure from a Trump-appointed regulator. “You look at what has happened in terms of how he has weaponised, for example, federal agencies going around after political satirists… His skin is so thin he couldn’t endure criticism from a joke, and attempted to shut down an entire media organisation in the process,” she said. She further criticised business leaders and institutions that have, in her view, yielded too easily to Trump’s influence. “There are many… that have capitulated since day one, who are bending the knee at the foot of a tyrant, I believe for many reasons, including they want to be next to power, because they want to perhaps have a merger approved or avoid an investigation,” Harris said. The White House responded dismissively to her remarks. “When Kamala Harris lost the election in a landslide, she should’ve taken the hint – the American people don’t care about her absurd lies,” said spokeswoman Abigail Jackson. “Or maybe she did take the hint and that’s why she’s continuing to air her grievances to foreign publications.” Harris recently released 107 Days, a memoir detailing her presidential campaign and the brief period she had to run after Biden withdrew amid questions over his health ALSO READ TOP STORIES FROM NIGERIAN TRIBUNE
