It was all sunshine, sand and Sooraj Hua Madham… until Karan Johar’s stomach decided to go rogue. This happened in Egypt, 2000-something. The sand was golden, the mood was cinematic, and Karan Johar was about to call “Action!” but just not the kind he expected. In the middle of shooting Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in Egypt, our favourite filmmaker was struck by a vicious case of loose motions that sent him sprinting behind a limestone like it was the world’s last washroom. Just when he thought he had found some “solitude,” destiny decided to add another plot twist as there was someone else squatting behind the next rock. The two locked eyes mid-squat. Recalling this toe-curling awkward moment, Karan Johar had once revealed, “So, I got the loosies one day in the middle of Egypt, while we were shooting Sooraj Huya Madham (Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham). I got a bad loose motions attack. And we were in this location where there were these lime stone structures and I just had to go behind one of them.” The 46-year-old filmmaker recalled how he ran quite a distance to find a hidden spot behind a limestone to answer nature’s urgent call. But just when he thought he’d found privacy, he spotted another man squatting behind a nearby rock — battling the same “situation.” The two locked eyes mid-crisis, completely helpless as their stomachs refused to cooperate. KJo added, “I went very far and there was this other person who was having the similar problem and he was behind another limestone. And, we both stared at each other, we both knew we were hiding. And it was the most embarrassing emotion. He stared at me and I stared at him and we were both in squat positions and I was like, ‘I am gonna die’ because he found the limestone, as did I, and we both thought we won’t tell anyone. But, it was a very bad attack that I had. I couldn’t help it. The vanity van was two kilometers away. Yeah, so. It’s called Far Fara dessert, where we shot that part. And it has my remains for life now.” The filmmaker said that the man belongs to Dharma Productions and is still very much in the company. “I have never looked at him in the same way after that experience and he is still very much in the company.” Bollywood may be full of drama, but Karan Johar’s Egyptian adventure takes the cake (or should we say, the crap).
