‘He Barely Sleeps Anymore’: Amazon Employee In Constant Fear Since Mass Layoff Announcement

Amazon has confirmed plans to remove 14,000 corporate jobs worldwide in one of its biggest rounds of mass layoffs as part of a restructuring plan. The move comes as the e-commerce giant ramps up spending on artificial intelligence while cutting costs elsewhere. As the company takes these steps, anxiety is spreading fast among employees who fear they could be next. A Reddit post has come to light that shows how such announcements can deeply affect workers’ mental health. The post is about user’s close friend employed at Amazon. ‘Mentally Wrecked By Uncertainty’ The Redditor shared the post with the title, “What layoff anxiety does to a blud who’s actually good at his job.” In it, they began by describing how their friend, who works at Amazon, has been struggling ever since the news of layoffs started spreading internally. “One of my closest friends works at Amazon. Exceptionally talented guy….the kind of person who solves technical problems others can’t even phrase properly,” they wrote. Yet, despite being highly skilled, the man now lives in constant fear of losing his job. According to the post, his anxiety has grown to a point where even a simple phone notification triggers panic. “He literally jumps at every phone notification. His heart starts racing every time his phone buzzes, thinking it might be that email — the ‘you’ve been impacted’ one,” he wrote. The user further revealed that his friend barely sleeps (only two or three hours a night) because many employees who were laid off earlier received their termination emails late at night or early in the morning. “So, now he stays awake in constant fear of that notification. Imagine being that scared of an email. He keeps saying, ‘I’m sure I’ll be next. They like people who talk a lot. I just… work’,” the post added. The Redditor said their friend’s biggest worry is that his communication skills might be held against him. “He was okay with this initially and agreed to work on it but with the constant state of fear and overthinking he thinks this could be one of the deciding factors,” the user said. Though his performance has been consistently strong, he feels overshadowed by newer colleagues. “It’s heartbreaking to see someone who’s great at what they do be this mentally wrecked by uncertainty. The kind of fear that turns your phone into an anxiety trigger. These corporates don’t talk enough about what layoffs or even the fear of layoffs do to people mentally. It’s brutal. I see the fear of losing job breaks you long before the layoff does,” the post concluded. One user commented, “I have been through this. The panic attacks you get, unable to eat and waiting for that message — it’s all real. Tell him to start searching for another job. When I was anxious, I focused on performing better, but if they’ve decided, they will still let you go.” Another said, “If you don’t have debts or big responsibilities and have some savings, you shouldn’t worry. At the end of the day, it’s just a job. If you have the skills, you’ll find even better opportunities.” “If he can clear Amazon’s interview, he can clear others too. Even if you create a spaceship, if they want, they’ll still let you go. So, ask your friend to take a break,” someone else suggested. “Hope he survives this layoff! But it seems he’s struggling with impostor syndrome. If he’s really as talented as you say, he’ll easily get offers from other reputable companies that pay similarly to Amazon,” read a comment. Amazon’s Job Cuts In India According to a report by the Economic Times, the company has laid off between 800 and 1,000 corporate employees in the country. These job cuts have mainly impacted workers who directly reported to global teams.
