‘Facing interviews essential part in everyone’s career journey’

“Students building confidence for facing interviews is the most essential part in their journey towards beginning a successful career,” said Venguswamy Ramaswamy, Global Head of TCS ioN. Addressing audience after inaugurating the Career Development Centre (CDC) at Thiagarajar College of Engineering here on Monday, he said, while the cognitive ability of students for logical and other aspects was good, they often lack the ability to narrate their experiences and skills. Though it was usual for those students coming from tier II and III cities to experience nervousness while attending interviews, Mr. Ramaswamy said, it should be overcome through constant training and homework. “As a student of Tamil medium education till class X, I very well know what it feels like to face the interviewer and the employer,” he recalled. Adding to this, he said, while looking at the CDC of the TCE, he was reminded of the real-time interview setup in TCS, which was developed to train their employees to face questions of the customers. “As it has become common for our customers to interview the TCS employees to test their ability for problem solving, we are into training our employees even after their employment,” Mr. Ramaswamy noted. K.M. Suceendran, Head-Academic Alliances Group, Tata Consultancy Services, said, “So far, we have focused on general hiring and training, but, moving on, we intend to change our approach towards technology-based hiring.” As another major step towards adopting the developing technologies, he added, they were planning to develop 50 Artificial Intelligence (AI) centres across the nation. “While TCE would have one of the centres it would be a great opportunity for the students to get hands-on training in the subject,” he noted. Hari Thiagarajan, Chairman and Correspondent, TCE, said, they hope that the facility would proliferate to benefit more students. “While the future is automatic, our training focuses on preparing the students to handle the automatic,” he added. He clarified that every investment they made was going to be a joint facility for both the arts and engineering students. “This development centre is a major leap in providing the students with a corporate setup to get trained to face real life job interviews. The centre with discussion room, interview room, among others, would resemble a corporate culture,” he noted.
