‘Do Not Travel’: Health risk prompts updated advisory for African destination

The United States Department of State updated its “Do Not Travel Warning” for the African nation of Sudan following health concerns. The travel advisory placed Sudan at a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” tier, which is the highest level listed by the department. The list begins at Level 1 meaning to “exercise normal precautions” when traveling to the destination, then Level 2 tells travelers they should “exercise increased caution” and Level 3 is for advising people to “reconsider travel” to that place. The country was already encountering issues like civil unrest, terrorism and crime. However, the advisory has been updated to include health and medical issues. “Medical services in Sudan are extremely limited,” the State Department travel update reads. “Adequate medical treatment for routine and emergency procedures is often not available. Even minor health issues could require medical evacuation at the traveler’s expense. Make sure you have medical or travel insurance that includes medical evacuation.” Travelers who still choose to visit Sudan are urged to check with their doctors about required vaccinations and shots needed for the trip. Updated travel health information for Sudan can also be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website.
