The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned the public over the widespread use of locally-made cooking pots, popularly known as “Dadesen,” after detecting dangerously high levels of lead in them. According to a report by 3news.com, the Eastern Regional Manager of the FDA, Anita Owusu-Kuffour, made this known during a stakeholder engagement at Somanya. She revealed that FDA surveillance uncovered a troubling practice among some local manufacturers who deliberately add lead during production. “When they are making the pots, the metal becomes hard, so they add lead to soften it. The sad part is that most local manufacturers have no idea about the health implications. “We are advising the public to stop using ‘Dadesen’ that contains lead,” he noted. FDA urges vigilance, warns of arrests for unsafe food sales Anita Owusu-Kuffour further cautioned against the use of worn-out nonstick cookware, explaining that once the protective coating erodes, it can release harmful heavy metals and toxic chemicals into food. “If the coating wears off, you are exposing yourself to serious health risks, including cancer, because some of these coatings contain heavy metals. The FDA said lead, a highly toxic heavy metal, makes the metal easier to mould but exposes users to severe health conditions such as cancer, kidney failure, and Parkinson’s disease.
