Before kickoff at Texas Tech on Saturday, ESPN’s “College GameDay” delivered more than pregame hype; Pat McAfee, one of the show’s most eccentric personalities, drew a heated reaction from the crowd by praising one of the Red Raiders’ biggest in-state college football rivals. After talking about how competitive the Big Ten is ahead of Iowa vs. Oregon, McAfee paused to point out “the only undefeated team in the state of Texas” — Texas A&M — and immediately drew a chorus of boos. McAfee praised A&M quarterback Marcel Reed and the Aggies’ defense, boldly saying in front of the Lubbock crowd that the Aggies “have it all.” He also gave a shoutout to Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez as a dark-horse Heisman candidate, but it did little to win over the Red Raider faithful. Reed has been the clear engine for the Aggies’ offense this year — 1,972 passing yards with 17 passing TDs and six interceptions through eight games, plus 349 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. His dual-threat production (2,321 yards of total offense) has pushed Reed into early Heisman buzz and made him the most important single-playmaker in Mike Elko’s offense. More importantly, however, the Aggies are getting after the quarterback, ranking first in the nation in sacks (32) and tied for third in tackles for loss (66), led by senior edge rusher Cashius Howell with 9.5 sacks and 16 total tackles. After Saturday’s contest against No. 22 Missouri, A&M heads back to College Station to play South Carolina and Samford before their season finale at No. 11 Texas — games that will determine whether the unbeaten record holds and how the Aggies’ resume shapes up for the CFP committee.
