‘Avengers: Doomsday’ to Mark Final Acting Role for Beloved Marvel Star

Although we’re still over a year away from the release of Avengers: Doomsday, the star power alone has helped it remain one of Marvel’s most highly anticipated movies in years. The hype ramped up quickly following Marvel’s roughly six-hour livestream that revealed a lengthy list of high-profile names, including many former actors who’d reprise their superhero roles. One of the many returning names is none other than Sir Patrick Stewart, who’ll return to play Professor Charles Xavier (Professor X) in Avengers: Doomsday. From 2000 to 2017, Stewart cemented himself as the face of Professor X, starring in seven X-Men movies, and following that up with an appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). However, after an incredible run in the iconic role, Stewart, 85, will reportedly call it a career following Avengers: Doomsday. Sir Patrick Stewart’s Final Bow Set for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ During a recent episode of The Kristian Harloff Show, the longtime Hollywood writer and entertainment reporter dropped a tidbit revealing that Avengers: Doomsday will be Stewart’s farewell movie. “So, we know that Patrick Stewart is going to be making an appearance here as Professor X, that we know,” Harloff said. “Apparently, he’s done with acting after this. That’s it. Apparently, this is it. Apparently, he’s stepping down.” While it’s never easy to see a name like Stewart decide it’s time to ride off into the sunset, it does seem fitting that he could go out while stepping into the role of Professor X for one final time. Along with being the longtime face of Charles Xavier, Stewart was also a prominent figure in the Star Trek franchise, portraying Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Stewart’s Impressive ‘X-Men’ Run as Professor X Set to Jump Into ‘Avengers’ Territory With all due respect to the stellar work James McAvoy did in the role of Charles Xavier, Stewart was integral to making the X-Men character what it is today. He debuted in the role during the original X-Men movie in 2000, beginning a stretch that included X2: X-Men United (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and Logan (2017). Thanks to Stewart’s role as Professor X in the 2022 Doctor Strange movie, he won’t have to knock off much rust to reprise the role for Avengers: Doomsday. While filming for the 2026 Avengers film had been ongoing since April 2025, it wrapped in Sept. 2025. However, even with filming finished, Marvel has apparently withheld plenty of casting information, as the company previously admitted it didn’t unveil the full list of actors/superheroes who’ll be in Avengers: Doomsday. It’s anyone’s guess if and when Marvel will provide more details on that front. For now, though, the fan speculation will continue to ramp up, as we still have a lengthy wait until Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
