'Stranger Things' Star Nearly Unrecognizable in Fat Suit for True Crime Film

Key Points David Harbour transforms for new film Evil Genius, directed by Courteney Cox. The movie is based on the true 2003 “pizza bomber” case and documentary. Harbour and Millie Bobby Brown affirm strong bond ahead of Stranger Things season five. David Harbour is trading his uniform and police badge for overalls and a gray beard. The Stranger Things star looked nearly unrecognizable as filming began on his new movie, Evil Genius, in Woodbridge, New Jersey. Wearing a fat suit, dark-framed glasses and a tan winter jacket, Harbour seemed completely transformed — quite a dramatic departure from his iconic Jim Hopper on Netflix’s hit series. Harbour, 50, rounded out the look with gray hair and a blue short-sleeve work shirt. Between takes, he was spotted holding a script and hanging out with the crew on set. The upcoming film, directed by Friends alum Courteney Cox, is inspired by the 2018 true crime documentary of the same name by Barbara Schroeder and Trey Borzillieri. In 2003, pizza deliveryman Brian Wells, 46, became the center of the shocking “pizza bomber” case, a story explored in the original four-part documentary. At the time, he tried to rob a bank in Erie, Pennsylvania, while wearing a explosive around his neck. Tragically, Wells died when it went off after the robbery. “I’ve been fascinated by ‘Evil Genius’ since I first saw the documentary,” Cox, told Deadline when the project was announced on November 5. “It’s stranger than fiction,” she added. “At moments darkly funny and yet deeply emotional. A story about love, loneliness, manipulation, and the people on the fringes who get pulled into something much bigger than themselves.” As filming continues, Harbour is preparing for the much-anticipated fifth and final season of Stranger Things, debuting November 26. Despite recent rumors of on-set tensions with co-star Millie Bobby Brown, Harbour and Brown seemed to be on great terms at the Season 5 premiere in Los Angeles. “I’ve obviously had a really special bond with David because we have a father-daughter relationship, and we do every scene together,” Brown told Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet. “You really get to see that in season 5.” “I adore her, and I’ve been proud to watch all of them grow up and become great artists,” Harbour told the outlet. “I doubt it will be the last time we’ll see each other in this world or work together.”
