'SNL' Legend Issues Apology to Madonna

Key Points Dana Carvey apologized to Madonna for a past awkward compliment at an SNL after-party. Carvey also publicly apologized to Sharon Stone for a controversial 1992 SNL sketch. Stone reflected on changing social attitudes toward humor and controversial content over time. Comedian Dana Carvey is offering an apology to singer and actress Madonna. Entertainment Weekly reported that Carvey shared a story about Madonna during the October 13 episode of his podcast, Fly on the Wall, co-hosted by David Spade. Carvey, who starred on Saturday Night Live for seven consecutive years until 1993, said he attempted to give Madonna a compliment during an early ’90s SNL afterparty. Carvey said that while Madonna “was cool,” he “just stepped in it without knowing” while interacting with her at the party. “She came over to our table at the party. And I think I said something really stupid because she was so fit. I said, ‘The thing I admire about you,’ and I shouldn’t have said ‘admire about you most,’ I might have accidentally said that. ‘Is how fit you are.’ And I can see later how she took offense to it, and she basically kind of said, ‘The thing you admire about me is how fit I am?’ Like, ‘I’m a f—ing artist.’ So she said kind of like, ‘F–k you’ or something like that,” said Carvey during his podcast interview, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. Carvey said he responded by flipping off Madonna, in a similar way his late SNL castmate Chris Farley would. “So I did Chris Farley’s thing, which I’d seen him do, because I just was triggered. So I go, ‘Madonna, can you hear this? Let me turn it up for you,'” said Carvey to Spade. Carvey said that Madonna didn’t seem overly upset about the situation. He surmised that she may have “really respected it.” “So then she left, about a half hour later, she came back and sat on my lap. Not in a seductive way, but in, like, a puppy-dog, friendly way,” said Carvey. He clarified that he was sorry for how he acted toward the “Material Girl” singer. “I made a mistake. I apologize to her if she’s listening on this podcast. It was rude,” said Carvey while recording the Fly on the Wall episode. Dana Carvey Apologized to Sharon Stone on His Podcast This isn’t the first time Carvey has issued an apology on his podcast. CNN reported that actress Sharon Stone appeared in a March 2024 episode of Fly on the Wall. During the podcast episode, Carvey referenced that Stone hosted a 1992 SNL episode. While filming the SNL episode, he and Stone appeared in a sketch together, wherein his character was making sexually inappropriate comments toward her in an airport. “I want to apologize publicly for the security check sketch where I played an Indian man and we’re convincing Sharon, her character, or whatever, to take her clothes off to go through the security thing,” said Carvey to Stone in the podcast episode. Stone then shared her thoughts about the sketch, as reported by CNN.
