Email tips@dailymail.com By VICKI POWER Published:14:03 GMT, 31 October 2025 |Updated:14:03 GMT, 31 October 2025 After two decades on A Place In The Sun, showing Brits that an idyllic life in Spain is achievable, presenter Jasmine Harman took the plunge herself two years ago when she and her husband, TV cameraman Jon Boast, decamped from south London with their two children to Estepona on Spain’s Costa del Sol to start a new life. But their dream move turned into a nightmare when in January this year Jon suffered a major health setback. ‘Basically something happened and Jon was unable to work for five months, so the extra financial strain was intense,’ explains Jasmine, 49, when we meet over Zoom from her Spanish home. Contrary to their original plan, the couple had bought a house that needed total renovation and the strain of that and Jon’s illness put a lot of pressure on their marriage. ‘You wouldn’t believe the amount of strain that my husband put me through, although it was largely to do with things that were outside our control, like him being out of action,’ says Jasmine. ‘Everything was on me, including looking after him which of course I was happy to do, but it was just a lot. At times my mental load was off the chart and it felt very, very overwhelming. I was thinking, “Will I ever get through this?”’ A Place In The Sun's Jasmine Harman, 49, took the plunge herself two years ago when she and her husband, TV cameraman Jon Boast, decamped from south London with their two children to Estepona on Spain’s Costa del Sol to start a new life But their dream move turned into a nightmare when in January this year Jon, 45, suffered a major health setback Contrary to their original plan, the couple had bought a house that needed total renovation and the strain of that and Jon’s illness put a lot of pressure on their marriage What went wrong with Jon and the house move will become painfully clear in Jasmine’s Renovation In The Sun, a new 15-part Channel 4 series detailing the enormous difficulties the family faced during their relocation. ‘We moved to Spain to have a more relaxed lifestyle and to be able to spend more quality time together as a family,’ says Jasmine. Her 21-year tenure on the show meant that for years Jasmine had spent weeks away filming from her children, Joy, now 12, and Albion, seven. Moving to Spain meant she’d often be able to commute to her job daily and it would be Jon’s turn to fly back and forth to the UK to work on British TV series. The pair had chosen Estepona, a coastal town about 90km southwest of Málaga, after Jasmine showed properties there to dozens of prospective buyers on A Place In The Sun and fell in love with it. ‘It feels very Spanish and it’s picturesque,’ she says. ‘I’d already found a school I liked for the children and we found an area we could afford where we could walk to the beach every day. Estepona really spoke to us because it’s got everything but it still feels very authentic, and we’re part of a really nice community.’ And so, after a year of living in rental properties, in September 2024 they sank their money into a four-bedroom house that was a wreck (Jasmine declines to name the price). The spacious house hadn’t been remodelled in decades and was crumbling – a disused hot tub was growing fungus on the terrace, there were exposed pipes and wires in the house and the basement was piled high with junk. The pair had chosen Estepona, a coastal town about 90km southwest of Málaga, after Jasmine showed properties there to dozens of prospective buyers on A Place In The Sun and fell in love with it After a year of living in rental properties, in September 2024 they sank their money into a four-bedroom house that was a wreck (Jasmine declined to name the price) ‘A house renovation was the last thing we were thinking about doing because it was almost the opposite of why we moved to Spain,’ says Jasmine. ‘We didn’t want to be stressed or pressured or up to our eyeballs in decisions and spending all our money, but we looked at a lot of houses and this is the only one we agreed on.’ Yet despite being known as a property expert, Jasmine had never renovated a house. ‘We went into it very inexperienced and naive and not really knowing how we would do it, but just knowing it was possible and we wanted to do it,’ she says with a wry chuckle. Tight finances meant the family had to live in the house while the builders were in. ‘That’s not for the faint-hearted,’ says Jasmine ruefully. ‘Plus doing the renovation in another country in a different language with a TV crew following us around the whole time, and then with the other things that happened on top of that, it was a lot.’ Apart from Jon’s health problems, their biggest headache was blowing the budget by a wide margin. ‘I would say we probably spent a good 50 per cent more than we were hoping to spend,’ says Jasmine. ‘The driveway and patio cost a lot more than we were expecting. We thought they’d need to dig a little bit of soil out and put a hard base down and tile it, but in the end it took months because there was so much topsoil.’ Adding to her frustrations, sometimes the builders got it wrong. ‘When they were digging up the driveway, they went through the soil pipe not just of my house, but of my neighbour’s as well. That was an awkward conversation! And the builders broke three water pipes in three days, which was a bit annoying. We had some amazing builders but some bad ones, too, like an electrician who was not very good or reliable.’ When Jasmine was at her wits’ end, her mother Vassoula would fly over from the UK to help. ‘She was my guardian angel,’ says Jasmine. ‘She was an extra pair of hands when I was struggling – helping around the house, cooking dinner and keeping the kids entertained while I would work on the renovation.’ The spacious house hadn’t been remodelled in decades and was crumbling – a disused hot tub was growing fungus on the terrace, there were exposed pipes and wires in the house and the basement was piled high with junk Tight finances meant the family had to live in the house while the builders were in. ‘That’s not for the faint-hearted,’ says Jasmine ruefully Now the Harman-Boast family is settled happily in their almost-renovated house - although the children attend an international school where lessons are in English and many people in Estepona speak English, the whole family is learning Spanish We went on A Place in the Sun - it turned into a nightmare and we're STILL homeless Now their dream home is almost finished, with Jasmine’s sanity intact, what has she learned from this stressful adventure? ‘Be ready to compromise on what you’d hoped for,’ she says emphatically. ‘I’ve said that for years to my house hunters and I had to take my own advice. For example, we have a big bedroom with a small window and wanted a larger one built with a Juliet balcony, but had to scrap it because it was too expensive. Also, accept what you have no control over – I’ve learned that going with the flow and being adaptable if your plan doesn’t work out is vital.’ Seek help when needed too, she urges. ‘One of my biggest hurdles was getting the works licence required for renovations in Spain. I put it off because I couldn’t make head nor tail of what to do online. In the end I went into my local town council office and they bent over backwards to help me do it. Speaking to a real life human being was a lifesaver. ‘Lastly, get builders that can work in your timeframe. We had four or five firms come to give us an estimate, but some had a year’s waiting list,’ she says. ‘If you can plan ahead and book your builders early – get recommendations from friends, if you can – obviously that is a much better way to do it.’ But now the Harman-Boast family is settled happily in their almost-renovated house (there’s drilling in the background as we speak). Although the children attend an international school where lessons are in English and many people in Estepona speak English, the whole family is learning Spanish. Despite the stresses of the renovation though, Jasmine has no regrets about finding her own place in the sun. ‘There was no way we would have been able to afford a house like this if we hadn’t done the work,’ she says. ‘Regardless of all the ups and downs and the hard work and the stress and the pressure, it was all worth it.’ One moment in particular convinced her they’d made the right decision. ‘Our swimming pool had taken months and months to renovate and so the moment in July that we could use the pool for the first time, me and the kids just jumped in,’ says Jasmine. ‘That was a big moment for me, because until then it had just been stress and dust and noise. Getting in the pool made us think, “We’re in Spain now and living the dream!”’ Jasmine Harman’s Renovation In The Sun begins on Monday November 3 at 5pm on Channel 4.
