'Momentary lapse in concentration' resulted in rear-ending

A garage man who rear-ended another vehicle and caused extensive damage was not distracted by his phone or by changing the channel of his radio when the accident occurred. Judge James Faughnan was given this assurance at Tuam District Court when Stephen Needam of 4 Millview, Abbeyknockmoy, appeared before him charged with careless driving at Abbeyknockmoy on October 23, 2024. The Court heard Garda evidence of an accident taking place on that date and when Gardaí arrived they found the defendant had rear-ended another vehicle and caused extensive damage. Olivia Moran solr, defending, said her client was 42 and worked in a garage on the administrative side of the business. She pleaded that a momentary lapse in concentration by her client had caused the accident. He had no previous convictions. Judge Faughnan inquired if this lapse was caused by him being distracted by his phone or by changing the channel on his radio while his attention should have been on the road in front of him. He was assured by the defence that this was most definitely not the case. A fine of €300 was imposed on conviction. This article is funded by Comisiún na Meán.
