'Modi is nicest looking guy': Trump heaps praises on Indian PM, repeats India-Pakistan ceasefire claim

PTC Web Desk: US President Donald Trump, while addressing business leaders at an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) luncheon in South Korea on Wednesday, showered praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him the “nicest looking guy” and “tough as hell.” Trump also reiterated his claim of having intervened earlier this year to ease tensions between India and Pakistan.Recounting events from May, Trump said he had “used trade pressure” to help stop a potential confrontation between the two nuclear-armed nations. “Two nuclear countries were ready to fight. They told me to let them, but I said no. Prime Minister Modi is the nicest looking guy. He’s a killer, tough as hell. But eventually, they called back and said they would stop fighting,” Trump told the gathering. The US President also hinted at an upcoming trade deal with India, saying, “I’m going to do a trade deal with India,” emphasising his strong ties with both New Delhi and Islamabad. “I have great love and respect for Prime Minister Modi. Likewise, the Prime Minister of Pakistan is a great guy, and his Field Marshal is a great fighter,” he added.Trump further claimed that he had informed both nations that the US would not proceed with trade discussions while they were in conflict. “I called Prime Minister Modi and said we can’t move forward with a trade deal while you’re fighting with Pakistan. Then I told Pakistan the same thing,” Trump stated. This is not the first time Trump has made such assertions. He has earlier claimed to have played a mediating role between India and Pakistan after border tensions escalated earlier this year. However, New Delhi has consistently denied these claims, maintaining that the ceasefire was achieved through direct bilateral engagement without external involvement.
