An 'iconic' green grocers which was earmarked for closure at the end of the month has been saved. Customers reacted with sadness after Erdington -based Joe Richards Fruiterer and Greengrocer announced they were shutting after 30 years on the High Street due to the tough economic climate. On Tuesday (Nov 4), owners George Perry Ltd, revealed the business has been sold to one of their customers and will be continuing as a fruit and vegetable store. "It will still be a fresh fruit and vegetables and grocery shop maintaining high standards which we have always kept." ‘We have enjoyed having a business on Erdington High Street, and would like to thank all our loyal customers over the years for their custom and friendship. "We wish the new owner all the success, and will assist them anyway we can going forward." The transfer should happen at the end of November depending on legal transfers. Erdington MP Paulette Hamilton said shops such as Joe's represented the "beating heart of our high street." Mrs Hamilton said: "This is fantastic news and a huge relief. "The fact that a customer has stepped in to continue the legacy of Joe Richards is a powerful reminder of the value we place on our local shops. “It’s an iconic spot on our high street and proves that, with community support, our local businesses have a fighting chance. “I offer a very warm welcome to the new owner and my heartfelt thanks for keeping this Erdington treasure alive and trading.” George Perry Ltd was established in 1870, now regarded as the oldest fruit importer in the United Kingdom.
