Now Halloween is over, our sights are set on Christmas - and it means pretty much every restaurant and supermarket are rolling out their festive menus. Popular fast food chain Popeyes is one of the many fast food chains launching their brand new festive menu, which they promise is their cheesiest yet - and what's Christmas without a serious number of cheeseboards? I always opt for a cheese option when I order fast food, mostly in the form of some sort of cheeseburger, so I was happy this was Popeye's theme for the menu - but I was curious to see just how festive they were making their iconic chicken sandwiches. The indulgent cheesy festive menu features the chain's first-ever warm cheddar sauce that is drizzled all over the chicken sandwiches creating the Cheesy Chicken Sandwich, as well as the Cheese Loaded Fries and a Big Cheese dipping pot too. So I took on the seriously tricky task of trying the new menu - and it's safe to say - it's a LOT of cheese. I first tried the chicken sandwich, which was very, very messy. The crunchy chicken breast was topped with the melted cheddar cheese sauce, that also included two crunchy pickles and another slice of cheddar cheese and a sweet tangy Cajun ketchup all in two brioche buns. The Cajun ketchup and melted cheese was oozing out of the bun, so you definitely need your napkins at the ready, but the two sauces combined gave a really creamy yet tangy flavour. I really enjoyed the two flavours together, but I just can't really get that much of a festive feel from it. While cheese is a true Christmas staple, I can't help but think to make it a true festive sandwich, it would have been better with stuffing or some type of cranberry sauce. The major issue is that, to me, it just felt like a normal cheesy chicken sandwich - but nevertheless, was still delicious and I really enjoyed the mild kick of the Cajun sauce to spice up the cheese a little to stop it from being a little bland. The cheesy fries were very generously topped with the same melted cheddar sauce, which meant they really lived up to their name of loaded fries. You could still taste the classic seasoning, with the melted creamy cheese combined. These were a really good addition to the menu, and I would love for them to stay - but they are definitely made for two people! In terms of the new menu, Dave Hoskins, Head of Food at Popeyes UK said: “This holiday season, we wanted to offer something we have never done before here in the UK. Cheese boards are a staple of festive spreads across the nation and synonymous with good times at this time of year, so at Popeyes we thought this was the perfect occasion to offer our fans something indulgent centred all around this decadent ingredient. “Our fans can enjoy it drizzled over our internet-breaking Chicken Sandwich, alongside fresh pickles that cut through the indulgent cheese sauce, as well as Cajun ketchup that creates a sweet contrasting flavour to the cheese and chicken," he added. Overall I was impressed with the new cheesy menu, and I really think the Cajun ketchup worked well with the cheese. I think these are great menu additions, however I just don't think they scream festive food as much as it could have done.
