EXCLUSIVE: Following the successful launch of the Apple TV series The Last Frontier, Apple and director Sam Hargrave have found their next project on which to team. The director is in talks to helm an adaptation of the Dark Horse Comic Last Flight Out. Apple Original Films landed the package, which sources say was in the seven-figure range, and will develop along with Chernin Entertainment. The film is being adapted from Marc Guggenheim’s acclaimed graphic novel published by Dark Horse and illustrated by Eduardo Ferigato. Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and David Ready, Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg Hargrave are set to produce. Guggenheim will adapt the script. The novel series is about a father and daughter trying to reconcile at the end of the world. Apple and Chernin view this as a major event film and, given Hargrave’s track record with action-heavy pics like his Extraction films at Netflix and most recently The Last Frontier series, of which he helmed several episodes, Last Flight Out feels like the perfect project to add to his slate. The project also reunites Apple with Hargrave after the two worked together on the upcoming tentpole Matchbox starring John Cena. Hargrave is repped by WME. As for Guggenheim, he is best known for being one the architects of the Arrow-verse and has been on a roll of late, selling three pilots in the past six months. He is currently the writer and EP of the upcoming Netflix movie An Innocent Girl to be directed by Jaime Collett-Serra (Carry-On), which is in pre-production. He is repped by CAA, Cliff Roberts at Syndicate Entertainment and attorneys Wendy Kirk and Matthew Johnson. As for Chernin, the company has been busy after recently inking a first-look feature deal with Apple TV. Last Flight Out joins previously announced Five Secrets, a spec Apple preemptively purchased before Chernin could take it to market. Chernin Entertainment has produced multiple projects for Apple TV including the epic Chief of War starring Jason Momoa, the Emmy-nominated See also starring Momoa, NAACP Award-winning Truth Be Told starring Octavia Spencer and Gabrielle Union, and Emmy-winning documentary series The War for Football.
