'Do not travel' warning issued after 'suspicious' suitcase sees bomb disposal teams called to Stockport station

A "do not travel" warning has been issued after Stockport railway station has been evacuated on Tuesday evening. Trains have been cancelled, people have been evacuated and bomb units have attended the station along with police, fire crews and paramedics on Greek Street this evening (November 4), with a 200m cordon currently in place. The incident is focussed around a footbridge at Stockport railway station with all trains currently unable to serve the station. It's thought emergency crews were called to reports of a 'suspicious' suitcase and some nearby homes have reportedly been evacuated. See our ongoing live blog for regular updates on the incident. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said, “Just before 6pm this evening (Tuesday, 4 th November), firefighters were called to reports of a suspicious item on Greek Street in Stockport. And now, Northern Trains have issued a "do not travel" warning amid the ongoing incident. In a statement posted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter , Northern said: "We have issued a Do Not Travel warning on the following lines until the end of service today: "Manchester Piccadilly to Chester. "Manchester Piccadilly to Stoke. "Manchester Piccadilly to Alderley Edge/Crewe - where possible services will divert via Styal. all stations between Stockport and Handforth will not be served. "-Manchester Piccadilly to Hazel Grove /Buxton. "Customers are advised to travel via any alternative route using the ticket acceptance we have in place "Our team are doing their best to source Rail Replacement buses, however availability is limited and may not be possible on all routes Thank you for your patience." In addition, an Avanti West Coast spokesperson said: “Stockport station has been evacuated, and all lines are currently blocked. Customers are advised not to travel to the station and check our website or social media for latest updates.” An earlier post from Northern Assist, posted shortly before 8pm, reads: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident at Stockport the line is blocked "Services running through this station will be cancelled or delayed by up to 45 minutes." People are 'sheltering' in the nearby Army Reserve Centre, on Armoury Street, close to the footbridge, as well as the nearby Armoury Pub after being advised to do so by the bomb disposal team, it's understood. People are also being held on various train services this evening. One person contacted us to tell them their train had been halted on the line near to Cheadle as passengers were informed of a 'suspicious item' near to Stockport. Another train service was held outside of Stockport for some time before being redirected to Manchester through Wilmslow .
