'Deal or No Deal?': What Trump Said About India-US Trade Talks and ‘Tough-as-Hell’ Modi

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that the United States and India will sign a long-delayed trade deal, amid reports that New Delhi and Washington are in advanced negotiations to seal the framework for a new trade agreement. Trump made the statement in South Korea, on the last leg of his Asia tour. Addressing Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) business leaders in South Korea, Trump also called PM Modi the "nicest looking man", and repeated his claim of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan amid Operation Sindoor in May this year. "He's a killer. He's tough as hell," said Trump of PM Modi. "I'm doing a trade deal with India, and I have great respect and love for Prime Minister Modi. We have a great relationship. Likewise, the Prime Minister of Pakistan is a great guy. They have a Field Marshal. You know why he's a Field Marshal? He's a great fighter. And so I know them all. I'm reading that seven planes were shot down. These are two nuclear nations. And they're really going at it. And I called Prime Minister Modi and said, we can't make a trade deal with you. No, no, we must make a trade deal. I said, no, we can't. You're starting a war with Pakistan. We're not going to do it. And then I called Pakistan and said, we're not going to do trade with you because you're fighting with India. They said, no, no, you should let us fight. They both said that. They're strong people," he said. "Prime Minister Modi is the nicest-looking guy. He's a killer. He's tough as hell. No, we will fight. I said, Whoa, this is the same man that I know. After literally two days, they called up and they said, we understand, and they stopped fighting. How is that? Isn't that amazing? Now, you think Biden would have done that? I don't think so..," he added. Talks over the deal have dragged on for months over Washington's objection to India's oil buy from Russia, and a row over tariffs. "… if you look at India and Pakistan, so I'm doing a trade deal with India and have great respect and love for Prime Minister Narendra Modi… we have a great relationship," he said. India-US Trade Deal in the Pipeline India and the US are reportedly in advanced negotiations to seal the framework for a new trade agreement. Times Now has learnt that negotiations are in the final stages, with talks focused on reducing US tariffs on Indian exports, possibly cutting them to 15% from the current 50%. The proposed pact, if concluded, could revive trade relations between Washington and New Delhi, which had cooled after Trump imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods -- 20% of which were penalty duties aimed at what he claimed was India’s funding of the war in Ukraine.
