'Cookout With The Candidates' Offered Over Screws Incident In Abington

Abington Commissioner Jeffrey Browne has invited GOP challenger Maria DellaMonica to "break bread together" on Sunday. ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — Abington Township Commissioner Jeffrey Browne wants to "break bread" with his GOP opponent over an incident this past weekend in which screws were allegedly left in the driveway of her supporters. Browne, a Democratic incumbent who represents Ward 6 in North Hills, has invited Republican challenger Maria DellaMonica for a "Cookout with the Candidates" on Sunday. Abington Police are investigating several incidents over the weekend of screws being left on the driveways of residents displaying political signs DellaMonica, who is running for a commissioner seat against Browne in Tuesday's general election. The Abington Human Relations Commission said that "acts targeting individuals for their beliefs undermine the democratic process and erode the sense of trust that holds our township together." "Let's remember that first and foremost, we are a community and we should focus on being neighbors. This week has been tumultuous for so many, including people who are just trying to do their civic duty and support a candidate that they believe in," Browne said. Browne extended an invitation to DellaMonica and her family and the North Hills and Ardsley community to attend the cookout at the corner of Maple and Pine at the Little Math Library for a "cookout with the candidates." "Leave your politics at home and let's break bread together," Browne said. "Be ready to meet a neighbor that you've never spoken to before, and let's come together as a community." The event takes place from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday with hot dogs, burgers, cider, and hot chocolate. DellaMonica told Patch on Wednesday that Browne never personally extended her an invitation. "I'm scheduled to be out of town this weekend," she said. "Had I been notified about this, I would have loved to attend with our community." Anyone with information regarding the incidents or who may be victims themselves should contact Detective Dan Bullock at 267-536-1107 or dbullock@AbingtonPA.gov.
