'Can't Wait For 25 Years': IAF Eyes 6th-Gen Pilotless Fighter Jets With Laser Defence

As countries like the United States, China, and Russia race ahead with 6th-generation fighter jets, India is determined not to repeat past delays in advanced combat aircraft development. While the Indian Air Force (IAF) continues work on its indigenous 5th-generation fighter jet under the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program, officials are already planning for the next leap in aerial warfare. Experts suggest it may take eight to ten years before India fields a fully operational 5th-generation jet. Meanwhile, the IAF has begun exploring 6th-generation fighter technologies, including deep stealth systems, manned-unmanned teaming, laser weapons, and “smart” stealth skins. These innovations aim to make future aircraft virtually invisible to radar while enhancing offensive and defensive capabilities. Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti recently highlighted the urgency at a defence conference, saying, “When 5th-gen platforms started 25 years ago, we can’t wait another 25 years.” This statement reflects the Air Force’s resolve to avoid repeating the protracted timelines that have delayed previous programs. According to defence analysts, India plans to follow a phased approach. First, the AMCA prototype is expected to take flight, with testing scheduled by 2028. Following this, research and development on a 6th-generation fighter, drawing on the same technological base, will commence. These next-generation jets are expected to feature pilotless operation, indigenous engines, clean energy systems, laser-based defenses against drones and missiles, and advanced stealth capabilities through “smart skin” technology. Global peers have already advanced in this area. The United States’ Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) programme, China’s FC-31 derivative, and Russia’s PAK DP project are all in advanced stages. For India, the move represents more than just military modernisation. Analysts say the effort underscores a broader push for technological self-reliance, strategic autonomy, and regional balance. Developing 6th-generation jets will require substantial funding, strict adherence to timelines, and access to cutting-edge technologies. Yet the IAF is confident that its new strategy, combining indigenous research with long-term planning, marks a decisive shift.
