Almost 9,000 new homes and a bold university vision form part of a string of developments tabled across Greater Manchester recently. Manchester Metropolitan University have scaled back their library development plans. Their 13-storey institution with a ‘zig-zag’ design, wrapped round a central glass box, caught traction when it was first mooted. MMU still says the new building is set to become ‘a bold and future-focused space at the heart of the campus’, despite drawing back some of the original scheme. Bolton council plans to place 10 sleeper pods and a kitchen and office module on a vacant church car park, at Higher Bridge Street, next to Topp Way. The council said the pods would shelter people who are some of ‘the most vulnerable in the borough’. The pods will be placed over the winter months to ‘support individual adults experiencing entrenched rough sleeping’ who for various reasons are unable to access other forms of temporary or emergency accommodation. Scaled back plans for new university library ‘a bold vision for the future’ A university has released images of scaled back design concepts for its new library. Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) said the new building is set to become ‘a bold and future-focused space at the heart of the campus’. The new library will replace the existing All Saints building with what MMU describes as ‘a purpose-built, digitally enabled facility designed to support study, research, and collaboration’. A portion of the current building will be retained and refurbished as part of the plans. The new plans for the library, to be built in the shadow of Mancunian Way, are different to plans approved by city planners in early 2024. The current, approved blueprints are for a 13-storey institution with a ‘zig-zag’ design wrapped round a central glass box. Also previously approved were gallery and events spaces which would both be open to the public. A much neglected corner of Greater Manchester could soon finally be transformed More than a hundred new ‘affordable’ homes are planned for the site of a former railway in Oldham that has been left vacant for several years. Greggs have apparently been looking to expand to this part of the Rochdale borough for a while. Five car parking bays are also included in the plans to alleviate current parking problems at the site. Residents, businesses and others are now being asked to give their views on what they want Eccles to look like.
