As Smriti Mandhana guided reached her half-century, against New Zealand, Renuka was seen holding a spoter of a peacock. “Now it’s time for 100,” the poster said in the Hindi laguage, depicting 100 above the peacock. The peacock soon became the team’s emblem of hope, showing positivity when they needed it the most. Renuka explained that the move was to create a “chill” and lively atmosphere in the dressing room, which was crucial after three consecutive losses. PM Modi Hails Renuka’s Mother PM Modi lauded Renuka’s effort in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 and also praised her single mother for her hard work and sacrifice over the years. “But to your mother, I will respectfully offer my regards. How difficult her life must have been — she made such a big contribution for your progress. Even being a single parent, she worked so hard to build your life. And when a mother works this much and does so much for her daughter, that itself is a very big thing. Please convey my respects to her from my side,” PM Modi said. Renuka, originating from Parsa village in Rohru tehsil of Shimla district, played a significant role in the Indian team’s first World Cup title victory. Renuka’s father, Kehar Singh Thakur, who worked in the state’s irrigation and public health department, passed away when she was just three years old. According to her mother Sunita, it was Renuka’s uncle who recognised her talent and introduced her to cricket. At the time, Renuka’s uncle was a physical education teacher. He identified her talent and sent her to the Dharamshala cricket academy, where her career took off. (With inputs from Agencies)
