'Barry G' hailed for promotion of reggae and dancehall music

The Minister of Culture and Entertainment Olivia Grange, says broadcaster Barrington 'Barry G' Gordon, who died yesterday has left a lasting impact on radio broadcasting in Jamaica. Gordon died at the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital at age 70. Grange said, "Barry G, the legendary Jamaican radio announcer, who was also fondly called 'The Boogie Man' and regarded at one time as the 'King of Afternoon Radio' excelled at his craft for more than 45 years, starting at the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC) in the 1970s, shortly after leaving Kingston College." She said, "Barry G's impact on Jamaican radio is immeasurable. He played a significant role in promoting reggae and dancehall music and in launching the careers of iconic artistes such as King Yellowman and Beenie Man. "During his time on afternoon radio at JBC with His Two To Six Supermix show, he represented the station with flair in what was popularly known as the 'war of the afternoon shows' between JBC and Radio Jamaica, RJR." She also recalled his other musical clash with the famous David Rodigan of British radio. She said the sound system duel between them gained worldwide attention making the two broadcasters especially famous in the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan. Minister Grange said Barry G's legacy extends beyond his radio shows; that he inspired generations of broadcasters and will remain a beloved figure in Jamaican entertainment. His commitment to excellence and passion for music made him a legend in his own right, she said. "My sincerest condolences to his family, relatives, friends, associates, and fans and to the radio broadcasting community," she stated. Barry G's contribution to the development of local music was recognised with National Honours with the Order of Distinction, Officer rank, being conferred on him. We want to hear from you!
