Good tourist season with Balearics employment outstripping the rest of Spain

According to Labour Force Survey figures for July to September, employment in the Balearics increased by four per cent compared with the third quarter of 2024. In relative terms this was the highest increase in the country. The Balearics also had the lowest unemployment rate, the number of unemployed having fallen by 10,500; the rate was 5.8%. A total of 672,500 people were employed. The CCOO union responded to the announcement of the figures on Friday by saying they are "the result of the good tourist season". "We have record low unemployment figures, accompanied by an increase in the active population." However, the union added that "prosperity is real for companies that are improving their profits, while the rest of the population, the working class, is struggling and living in increasingly precarious conditions". The union concludes that the high cost of living and the "unaffordable" price of housing mean that "working in the Balearics is not worthwhile". It is therefore demanding wage increases to an income level sufficient for coping with prices. The general secretary of the UGT union, Pedro Homar, played down the figures. Some indicators of well-being are "devastating", especially those related to housing. "It seems unbelievable that politics cannot reverse the main problem we have in the Balearics. The economy is improving, but wealth is becoming increasingly unevenly distributed."
