Days after reports surfaced that Scarlett Johansson was in talks to join the cast of the live-action Tangled remake, the movie star finally broke her silence on the speculation. The remake has faced major speed bumps on its journey to the big screen. Disney reportedly put a pause on Tangled after the live-action Snow White bombed at the box office. However, the project was revived after a different live-action remake, Lilo & Stitch, was a hit with moviegoers. During an interview with ET, Johansson was asked if there was a strong chance that she would play Mother Gothel in a live-action Tangled movie. She acknowledged that "anything is possible" before adding that the opportunity to work with director Michael Gracey is what would excite her the most. Johansson went on to describe Gracey as an "extraordinary visionary" and claimed that any actor would "love" to collaborate with him on Tangled or any project, for that matter. Is there a real possibility? I think anything is possible. What would excite me about it would be the opportunity to work with Michael Gracey, who is attached to direct the film because he is absolutely an extraordinary visionary and any actor would love to have a collaboration. Gracey got his start in the entertainment industry working on music videos and visual effects. He is best known for directing the hugely successful movie musical The Greatest Showman. Gracey also used his background in music videos to direct Pink's documentary All I Know So Far and Robbie Williams' biopic Better Man, and he served as an executive producer on the Elton John biopic Rocket Man. If Johansson does end up signing on the dotted line to play Mother Gothel, she would be the first star to join Gracey's live-action Tangled remake. Various online rumors have pinned celebrities like Sabrina Carpenter, Florence Pugh and Gigi Hadid, among others, to the project, but, so far, there are no other actors on board Tangled. Johansson is best known for playing Black Widow in Marvel Cinematic Universe films like The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Black Widow. Outside the MCU, she has starred in such films as Lost in Translation, Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Her. She earned Oscar nominations for her roles in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. Johannson reportedly joining Tangled marks a major step forward for the remake, which is based on the 2010 animated film of the same name that starred Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider and Donna Murphy as Mother Gothel. Other voice actors included Brad Garrett, Ron Perlman, Jeffrey Tambor, Richard Kiel, M. C. Gainey and Paul F. Tompkins. Tangled is based on the classic fairy tale Rapunzel, which was ripe for a live-action remake after Disney did the same for several other films, including Cinderella, Maleficent (based on Sleeping Beauty), The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. However, some of the more recent live-action Disney films haven't been as well-received, with Snow White underperforming. The success of the Lilo & Stitch live-action remake turned that downward trend around, causing executives to take a second look at Tangled, which is a fan-favorite animated film among Disney fans.
